What is CACFP?

The Child and Adult Care Food Program, more commonly called CACFP, is a federal program that provides reimbursements for nutritious meals and snacks to eligible children and adults1 who are enrolled for care at participating child care centers, day care homes and adult day care centers.

CACFP also provides reimbursements for meals served to children and youth participating in afterschool care programs, children residing in emergency shelters and adults over the age of 60 or living with a disability and enrolled in day care facilities.

Benefits for providers participating in CACFP

  • Providers receive reimbursement for eligible meals served to children in their family daycare or group family daycare program.
See here for Meal Reimbursement Rates.
  • Parents appreciate not needing to bring or pay for food for their children while in your care.
  • Providers receive valuable training in healthy food preparation and how to help children make healthy eating choices.
  • Participation in CACFP is an indicator of quality care that will reflect positively on your program.

Why join the UNECE CACFP Food Program

  • We have a team that will bend over backwards to help you with the application and onboarding process.
  • We have dedicated staff to assist you with both the programmatic, logistical and financial aspects of the program.
  • Thanks to our partnership with the accounting department of the United Federation Teachers, all our sponsors get paid no later than the twelfth day of the following month — for example, payment would be received by Feb. 12 for all meals served in January. Sponsors have the option of being paid by check or direct deposit and will always be treated fairly.
  • Through a contract with the New York City Department of Education’s Division of Early Childhood Education, UNECE is also a network of childcare providers across multiple boroughs. If you are already affiliated with that network — or eventually choose to — you will benefit from the integration between our programs, which leads to a more streamlined experience with minimal interruption to your program.

As part of their regular care, children receive nutritious meals and snacks at child care centers and homes that participate in CACFP. Child care centers, day care homes, afterschool care centers, and emergency shelters receive cash reimbursement for serving meals and snacks that meet Federal nutritional guidelines to eligible children and adult participants.

Eligible children include infants and children through age 12 in child care centers and day care homes.

Day care homes may be approved to claim reimbursement for serving up to two meals and one snack to each eligible child participant, each day.

In day care homes, all meals are served free. Day care home providers that serve children in low income areas, or meet low income eligibility requirements themselves, receive higher levels of reimbursement.
